This painting seems saturated and heavy with water. Its predominantly blue colour, the clouds apparently pregnant with rain and the wide river winding through the hills would all enforce the experience or contemplation of this natural element. Also, the pixellated surface through which the landscape is viewed can also seem like a window dripping with rain. There is a modern construction over the river, making entry into the water avoidable and the landscape is surprisingly barren despite the abundance of water. If the water is a metaphor for the spiritual, then it would suggest a modern world at odds with itself and religiously frustrated.
