My work has recently been inspired by TS Eliot, a modernist poet and
writer. Among his themes is the boredom and horror of modern existence.
The landscape in which I have grown up has been formed by the
motivations and desires of the people that have lived here, which I suppose
can be categorised as the bourgeoisie. There is a certain ’placelessness’ or
universality here that seems to be characteristic of modern suburbs. As the
landscape has appropriated from the modernized ‘West’, it has lost some
of its ’South African-ness’. Intermixed with these relatively new modern
influences is the spectre of the ’old’. I am often struck by the seemingly
haunting nature of the older elements, that of the sky and the vegetation.
