In this painting a large tree is fenced in by power lines. The tree speaks of nature and what has existed for ages, while the power lines speak of modernity and what has only comparatively recently been introduced. There is an uneasy coexistence between the old and the new, or a somewhat traumatic conformity of the present to the past, and vice versa. The present’s view of the past is different from the past’s view of itself, as a result of the perspective given by hindsight. The digital-like grain or texture of the surface speaks of the newer influences in life experience. It forms a grid of sorts that seems to awkwardly stretch out and structure the contents of the painting.
