In J.D. Salinger’s book, ’Catcher in the rye’, we walk a bit with Holden Caulfield, a bourgeois seventeen year old boy living in New York. It is a dystopian novel that speaks of the unsuitability of Holden’s environment for his existence. There is something very important wrong or missing. It is almost impossible for him to detect or realise exactly what it is, but he can sense something. It haunts him in a vision he has of children playing and running in a field of rye. He cares for them by watching them and stopping them from falling over a cliff as they play. In this vision he has a role to play, a purpose, which seemingly has no place in this modern world.
